Seasons of Life: Halloween Blanket

There is nothing more constant than change. Seasons represent that change. We measure the joys, sorrows, and milestones of life by seasons. Nature's seasons and life's seasons teach us, change us, and shape us. In starting this (my mom's Festive and Fun blog) up again I will feel closer to her through celebrating seasons of life in a way she always would. I have lived a full year of seasons without her now, and it seems poetic to begin blogging as if she will continue through the seasons with me. She was amazing! I plan to continue her work because it inspires me.

To kick off the Fall season, I finished a festive Halloween blanket that my mom had started. Enjoy the video tutorial and steps.

Festive Halloween Blanket: How To--

1. Find the fabric you want. Can be one solid pieces, two solid pieces, or several different patterns patched together.

2. Figure out what size blanket you want. This on is 44.5" by 61".

3. Align right sides together. Pin in place.

4. Sew edges together, leaving a few inches opening to pull materials through to turn right side out.

5. Push out edges to make sharp edges.

6. Hem the opening.

7. Iron blanket, flattening edges.

8. Cuddle up for the season!

DIY Haunted Bottles, Lantern & Candles

DIY that will turn those not so interesting bottles into something INTERESTING and SPOOKY.

What you'll need:

Grey/Black/Green Chalk Board Paint
Gold Accent Paint
Sand or Dirt
Empty Medicine Bottles
Hot Glue Gun
Raff or Straw
Sand Paper
Large Wood Beads
Paint Brush

Cheap But Festive Halloween Banner

The other day I was in Lowe's looking at paint samples, when I realized the cute little sample cards are the perfect size for flags on a banner. I picked out 14 fall colors and went home to make something cute!

Cut the bottom of the cards in a /\ shape...

2. Punch holes in each top corner...

3. I used cute polka dot cupcake liners for the letters background. I smashed them down so they would lay flat. Glue the letters on top. For a free printable of "Happy Halloween" click here

5. String the assembled cards onto twine or ribbon.

6. Add some spooky embellishments from the dollar store.

Bats, Cats and Rats Crafts

When I was a young girl, my family would vacation at Lake Arrowhead (California). My older sister and cousins would sneak out at night to throw rocks at the Bats. I would tag along with them, but I was terrified. I worried that one of the Bats would swoop down and bite me! Well, I won't have that worry with these Bat crafts.

When I think of bats, I think about them being ugly little animals, and they are! But a vampire bat is kind and good to its bat family. If a mama bat dies, another mama will adopt the children and take care of them. A bat family stays together until the baby bats are grown and make their own families. They can only live for two days without food or they will die. If one bat finds food and the other bat does not, then the one that found food will regurgitate some food to feed the other so it will not die. But if in the past the bat has been selfish and has not shared when there was a need, then the other bats will take note and not share with him if he is hungry. Even an ugly little bat knows that being selfish is wrong, and that if you want friends to be fair, then you, too, must share.

Many people are unaware that over 500 plant species rely on bats to pollinate their flowers, including species of mango, banana, and cocoa. So, next time you eat some chocolate, say thanks to the bats!
